Various kinds of body arts are present in the world. Body arts have been evolved form different traditions of races. History says that body art was very much present in the early days of human civilization. Since then people are attracted towards body art. Some of the body arts are done for religious purposes while others may be just for fun, specific occasion or event purpose.

There was a time when a necklace or an earring was considered fashionable. Then came the age of the punks when tattoos suddenly became cool, but because it hurt quite a bit, it never really caught on except among the very daring people. Now, however, there’s a solution if you always wanted to have body art, but was too scared to face the needle. It’s a new rage called body painting. Also, unlike tattoos, it’s temporary and can be easily removed.
One of the recent trends of body art is Full Body Painting. We have seen many people doing tattoos on their skin. Tattoos are usually permanent in nature that is they cannot be removed normally. Surgeries or skin transfers have to be done in order to remove a tattoo. Full Body Painting is quite similar to the tattoo making art. But the only difference is that they do not stay permanently. After a period of time generally a day the color gets removed. In case henna body painting the color remains for at least a week. Thus, Full Body Painting is also referred to as temporary body painting.
Body painting which is done on the face of a particular person is called face painting. When body painting is done is quite a large scale on the body it is referred to as Full Body Painting. While the same when done on limited region of the body, it is called temporary tattoo. Sometimes, clay and certain other natural pigments are used for body painting.
This is a tribal way of body painting and is quite popular in various tribes. Tribal people formAustralia,Pacific Islands,New Zealand and some parts of African content practice this art during particular festivals. Mehndi is quite popular in the eastern countries like India,Pakistan,Bangladesh, etc. A particular tribal race from South America use wet charcoal to decorate their faces. This is semi transfer ant in nature. From years clowns and actors used to paint their faces before a show to emphasize their roles. Later face painting items were included in daily cosmetic products to make the face glow and give a fair look.
The modern day body painting started to evolve since the end of 20th century. Initially it was introduced by the western society. Full Body Painting does not always mean nudity. They can be done to the cover the uncovered region of the body.
Nowadays several body painting festivals are organized in various parts of the world to promote the body painting art. Theme parties are also arranged. Moreover it has become a new form of art. Different stuffs are painted on the body surface. Different styles can be used on a particular body because of its temporary nature. People select the style according their own taste. Some prefer to paint body like their favorite animals while some may paint their body as their national flags, football team or any other supporting team.
Sometimes it becomes quite hard to make sure that whether the individual has body painted or is wearing a special costume. Special colors are available for body painting purposes which do not get washed away easily. Human body secretes sweat. So if a low grade color is used then, it can become fade in a very short time. The art comes within the budget of an individual.
In modern western culture, full body painting became quite prevalent during the 1960’s, helped in part by the various social revolutions. People became more liberal to the ideas of public nudity and exhibitionism. Just as is the case with every art form, body painting also has had its fair share of criticism. Most of this criticism was regarding doubts about whether it was a legitimate art form. But there are examples of body art which seem to defy this doubt.
One body artist called Joanne Gair has appeared for the 10th time consecutively on the cover of the Sports Illustrated magazine’s Swimsuit issue. This actor gained prominence when she body painted the famous actress Demi Moore, in what is often considered the best example of her work. In this work, she painted Miss Moore to look like she was wearing a suit, but in actuality, she was nude.
But it would be wrong to assume that body painting is simply an art form for relaxation or amusement. Most body art, nowadays, is meant to show support for a particular group or for a cause. One of the most prominent examples of this is the campaign by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) against Burberry, one of the leading fashion houses in the United States. The protest was against the use of fur in clothing.
